Course Description
This graduate-level course explores the historical development, theological significance, and enduring function of Christian creeds and confessions. Using Philip Schaff’s The Creeds of Christendom, Volume I: The History of the Creeds as the primary text, students will examine the ecumenical creeds, the distinctive formulations of the Greek and Roman churches, the Protestant confessions of the Reformation, and modern denominational statements of faith. Emphasis will be placed on the role of creeds in shaping theological orthodoxy, fostering church identity, and guiding ecumenical dialogue.
